ஓர் எழுத்தை ஒலிக்க ஆகும் நேரம் மாத்திரை. கண் இமைக்கும் நேரம் அல்லது கை நொடிக்கும் நேரம் ஒரு மாத்திரை.

Maathirai is the time a sound takes. One blink or one finger-snap is one maathirai.

குறில் 1, நெடில் 2, மெய்யும் ஆய்தமும் அரை (½).

Short = 1, long = 2, consonant and ஃ = ½.

சொல்லின் மாத்திரையைக் கூட்டிக் காணலாம்: மரம் = 1 + 1 + ½ = 2½.
