Letters that sound alike and are made in the same part of the mouth belong to one family.

குறில்–நெடில்: அ–ஆ, இ–ஈ, உ–ஊ, எ–ஏ, ஒ–ஓ. மேலும் ஐ–இ, ஔ–உ.

Vowel families: அ–ஆ, இ–ஈ, உ–ஊ, எ–ஏ, ஒ–ஓ, and ஐ–இ, ஔ–உ.

வல்லினம்–மெல்லினம்: க–ங, ச–ஞ, ட–ண, த–ந, ப–ம, ற–ன.

Each hard consonant has a soft partner: க–ங, ச–ஞ, ட–ண, த–ந, ப–ம, ற–ன.
